Sculpture of a Face
Forged mild steel
29″ x 19″ x 5″ ; 65 lbs.
This “Sculpture of a Face” wall hanging was forged out of a 1/4″ sheet of mild steel. Using a process called repose, where one heats up the material and using specialized hammers and shaping tools, raise and lower the material to create relief. In this case I used a modified hand-held air hammer to raise or depress the material and braced the material in a frame or against a wood block. I ended up blowing out the nose by pushing the material too far. It became too thin and brittle and eventually broke off. I thought of calling the piece, Cocaine Decision, the guy with the blown out nose, but thought some might be offended. My neighbor, Pamela, thought it was a buddha. She hardy noticed the nose. Look like anyone you know? Anyway, this was a fun piece to create as I had never tried these techniques before.
